Expectations vs Reality

Clay, 3D print, Markers, 3D scan
As an assignment in my 3D studio art class, I sculpted a clay coil pot. Despite having a clear plan beforehand, the resulting pot was uneven and full of imperfections. The piece became a visual representation of how my results often differed from my original ideas.
Independently, I sought to create a piece that expressed this contrast between expectation and reality. Using Rhino3D, I modeled the ideal version of the pot, then overlapped the 3D scan of my physical pot on it, creating a combination of the perfect and the imperfect.
Through this series, I realized that the imperfections I thought of as mistakes were traces of effort and process. I realized that design wasn’t about erasing the mistakes but rather seeing them as part of the creation.
