The video was inspired by my exhibition installation internship with an installation artist, Myungjoon Kim, who explored the relationship between architecture and sound. Intrigued by this surprising connection, I sought to further examine and document how the two intersect.
Upon rigorously asking around for technical advice to find a more detailed way to hear the sounds made by heavy materials, I was able to acquire several different microphones specifically designed to pick up low-frequency sounds. I visited various places, both quiet and loud, listening to anything within reach: walls, glass windows, elevators, doors, and much more. Each vibration recorded told a unique story–as if the architecture was talking to me.
This experience was a reflection of how unaware I had been. I had paid attention to the visual elements, but never the auditory. Architecture and our surroundings had so much more to offer, and this project became my first step in realizing it.
